Café Volcan Azul - Caturra
Gold medal at the Épicures trophies for Fine Grocery 2018. In Costa Rica, the Volcan Azul farm is an institution and its producer, Alejo Castro, a master at combining variety and process. Here, a full-bodied, smooth Caturra.
Sourcing note
Volcan Azul is more than a hundred years old and is now run by Alejo Castro, the sixth generation of farmers. Alejo, who is in his thirties, is part of the modern coffee movement and has considerably developed his production: plot-based planting, adaptation of prestigious botanical varieties and goldsmith's precision in the many processes carried out on the farm.
Volcan Azul is my favourite farm in Costa Rica, because everything is done to perfection. What's more, the Castro family are very likeable and are driven by a desire to do things right, doing everything possible to preserve their natural heritage. For me, this coffee is the reflection of a state of mind.

Tasting note
On the nose: notes of sweet spices, stone fruit and chocolate.
On the palate: a silky, enveloping texture. The cup oscillates between milk chocolate and stone fruit, underpinned by the slight exotic acidity that is the signature of this iconic Volcan Azul coffee.
This coffee is roasted for espresso methods.
