This Saturday at the World Of Coffee Copenhagen, Jordan Tachnakian, Barista and Quality and Learning Manager at Terres de Café, won the Cezve/Ibrik (Turkish coffee) World Championship. He succeeds Pierre De Chantérac, who won the championship in Athens in 2023.
Jordan joined Terres de Café in 2019, after an initial career in advertising. During a trip to Copenhagen, he discovered his first cup of speciality coffee.
"It was a real eye-opener, first for the senses, then emotionally with the barista's storytelling about coffee and his understanding of the complexity that exists from the tree to the cup".
He left his job with the desire to highlight the men and women who produce coffee and allow us to drink it, 5000km away and started as a barista at Coutume at the end of 2018 before joining Terres de Café in 2019.
"I've always been competitive, no matter what I undertake. In coffee that started in 2020/2021 when my colleague Pierre de Chanterac asked me to be his coach for the next Brewers Cup.
A year and a half of tests together (the covid in the meantime) and a second title for him at the end of 2021 persuaded me to go and reverse the roles. In 2022, I finished second in the Brewers Cup.
The best celebration of all came in 2023 when Pierre won the ultimate World Champion title.
I've often joked that I'm a better coach than him, if not a better competitor. 2024 is off to a good start, with the hope of once again making history.
"My vision of coffee is simple: it has to be holistic. A great coffee is great, but when human and ecological considerations are integrated, it's even better. I want to be able to drink coffee in 20 years' time, knowing that the people who produce it are making a better living from it than they are today.
