Coffee Kettles at Terres de Café
A coffee kettle is more than a standard household kettle: it is a precision tool designed for manual coffee brewing and slow coffee methods. A gooseneck kettle allows you to pour water slowly and precisely over the coffee grounds, giving you greater control over flow rate and water distribution during extraction.
This level of control is particularly useful for pour-over coffee and other manual brewing methods. On models with temperature control, you can also adjust the water temperature according to the coffee, roast profile and brewing recipe. Water temperature is one of several variables that influence extraction, alongside grind size, dose, brewing time and pouring technique.
How to Choose a Coffee Kettle
When choosing a coffee kettle, consider the level of pouring control, temperature precision and additional brewing features you need. Our selection includes several models designed for different coffee routines:
- Artisan (Brewista): an electric gooseneck kettle with a digital control base for precise temperature adjustment. Its Auto Brew function allows you to schedule heating in advance, making it particularly convenient for your morning coffee routine. It features a 1-litre capacity and a stainless steel and wood finish.
- Stagg EKG (Fellow): a precision electric coffee kettle with a narrow gooseneck spout designed to provide greater control over pouring speed and direction. Its ergonomic handle helps provide balance while pouring, while temperature control and a built-in brew timer make it easier to monitor your preparation. Its temperature can be adjusted from 50°C to 100°C, and it has a 1-litre capacity with a stainless steel finish.
- Stagg EKG Pro (Fellow): a more advanced version of the Stagg EKG, offering additional customisable brewing settings, WiFi-enabled firmware updates, altitude adjustment and preset temperature options for coffee and tea.
These three models meet different needs, from straightforward precision pouring to more advanced digital control for coffee drinkers who want to reproduce their brewing parameters consistently from one cup to the next.
Standard Kettle vs Gooseneck Kettle: What's the Difference?
A standard kettle usually pours water in a wider, faster stream, making it more difficult to control exactly where and how quickly the water reaches the coffee grounds.
A gooseneck kettle, by contrast, features a long, narrow spout designed to provide greater control over both water flow and pouring direction. This is particularly useful for manual pour-over methods, where the way water is distributed across the coffee bed can influence extraction.
For methods such as the V60 or Chemex, this additional control makes it easier to pour gradually and evenly throughout the brewing process.
Electric or Manual Coffee Kettle: Which Should You Choose?
An electric coffee kettle with temperature control allows you to heat water directly to your chosen temperature without having to monitor a separate thermometer. Depending on the model, it may also include a hold function to maintain the selected temperature for a period of time.
This makes an electric gooseneck kettle particularly convenient if you regularly prepare filter coffee or several brews in succession and want greater consistency from one extraction to the next.
A manual kettle can offer a simpler alternative if you already have another way to heat and monitor your water and mainly want the pouring precision of a gooseneck spout.
How to Maintain a Coffee Kettle
Regular maintenance helps keep your coffee kettle working efficiently. Descale it according to the hardness of your water and the manufacturer's recommendations, using a cleaning or descaling product suitable for the materials of your kettle.
Empty any remaining water after use rather than leaving it standing in the kettle for long periods. Allow the kettle to dry properly and regularly check the interior for mineral deposits, particularly if you live in an area with hard water.
FAQ About Coffee Kettles
Why Use a Gooseneck Kettle for Coffee?
A gooseneck coffee kettle gives you greater control over the speed and direction of the water as you pour. This makes it easier to distribute water evenly across the coffee grounds, particularly when preparing pour-over coffee with methods such as the V60 or Chemex.
What Water Temperature Should You Use for Filter Coffee?
The ideal water temperature for filter coffee depends on the coffee, roast profile and brewing recipe. As a general starting point, water around 90°C to 96°C works well for many specialty coffees, although the temperature can be adjusted according to the desired extraction and flavour profile.
What Is the Difference Between the Stagg EKG and Stagg EKG Pro?
The Stagg EKG Pro adds more advanced features, including WiFi-enabled firmware updates, customisable brewing settings, altitude adjustment and preset temperature options. The standard Stagg EKG focuses on precise temperature control, controlled pouring and a built-in brew timer.
Can You Use a Coffee Kettle for Tea?
Yes. A temperature-controlled kettle can also be used to prepare tea. Different types of tea benefit from different water temperatures, and adjustable models make it easy to select a lower temperature when required. Some advanced kettles also include preset temperature settings for different hot drinks.
